What is field of view in thermal imaging?

When evaluating thermal camera cores like those from Senssight, FOV (Field of View) defines the angular extent of the observable world that the camera sensor can “see” at any given moment. It is typically measured in degrees and is directly dictated by the relationship between the focal length of the lens and the physical size of the thermal sensor.
The field of view is broken down into three distinct directional measurements:

  • HFOV (Horizontal Field of View): The angular extent of the camera’s vision from the left edge of the frame to the right edge. This is usually the largest angle in standard widescreen or rectangular sensors and determines how much horizontal terrain you can monitor at once.
  • VFOV (Vertical Field of View): The angular extent of the camera’s vision from the top edge of the frame to the bottom edge. This dictates your vertical coverage, which is crucial for monitoring elevation changes or tall structures.
  • DFOV (Diagonal Field of View): The angular measurement from one corner of the image frame to the opposite corner (e.g., top-left to bottom-right). It represents the maximum angular span of the sensor and is often used by manufacturers as a single-number shorthand to describe the lens’s overall coverage capability.
